Startup Repair Hack
Okay, today we look at a security exploit that we have found, yet again, in Windows 7. This exploit has never been officially posted, so here it is. If you want to:
Follow the instructions carefully below!
1. Press the power button to turn on your computer. If your computer is already on, turn it off by shutting it down, or you can use our Fast Shutdown utility.
2. While your on the screen with the animated Microsoft logo press and hold the power button until it turns off. The animated Microsoft Logo is where the four balls of blue, yellow, red and green combine in to the Windows 7 icon. At this time, Force shutdown the computer by holding down the power button until the computer turns off.
3. Press the power button to turn on your computer again.
4. You should now see a list of options. One to 'Start Windows Normally' and another to Launch Start Up Repair. Select the option 'Launch Startup Repair' and press enter.
5. You should be taken to a window where you can choose some options. Choose Run Startup Repair.
- Gain administrative priviledges
- Modify Windows Settings
- Modify Restricted Folders
- Obtain full power to do anything you want to the Windows System

6. You should see a blue progress bar that moves across the screen repeatedly. Above it should be messages that say "searching for problems" or something like that.
7. The message should change to "Attempting repairs" within a few minutes.
8. Leave the computer running. This message should be there for 10-40 minutes depending on your computer.
9. After 10-40mins, a message should pop up that says "start up repair could not fix the problem" or "startup repair could not detect a problem". Click the arrow next to "view problem details".

10. Scroll to the bottom of the problem detail screen and you should see two blue hyperlinks. One leads to a website, and another leads to a text file. Click the link to the .txt file.
11. Notepad should open up with the file.
12. In notepad click File, from the menubar and then click Open.
13. You can now use the file browser in Notepad to perform the sethc.exe hack.
14. Go to C:\Windows\system32 and find sethc.exe and rename it to random.exe or something like sethc.exe.bak, as we don't need that anymore.
15. Copy the cmd.exe, the command line for Windows, and rename the copied file to sethc.exe
16. Restart the computer and at the login screen press the "shift" key 5 times in quickly.
Now you have access to the Command Prompt. You can modify settings, format drives, delete accounts and so forth. The last two steps are optional. If you want to know how to make a new administrator account, then follow the last two steps.
17. Type in the cmd window "control userpasswords2" without the quotation marks.
18. You can now make a new admin account and login with it or make your existing account an admin.
